Gemme glass tiles
Magically flecked with copper and gold, gemme tiles can be used to create dramatic and scintillating highlights. Introducing metallic speckles and veins into glass tiles was a skill first mastered on the Venetian island of Murano. The technique involves dropping small quantities of coloured enamel granules and aventurine glass (a compound containing copper- and other metallic-crystals) into molten glass in a highly controlled manner. These artisan techniques are still followed in Italy, particularly at our supplier, Bisazza, and have recently been adopted by Chinese makers to great effect.
