NO-CUT KIT - Solomon's knot
Make a mosaic of this ancient motif - £25 without tools, £45 with everything you'll need
INFORMATION
Use this kit to make a simple but striking mosaic of the ancient decorative motif known as Solomon's knot. You can choose either to buy the full version of the kit with everything necessary to create the mosaic, or you can buy a version without tools if you have plenty of equipment already.
The tiles supplied all measure 1cm x 1cm, so there is no cutting required. This kit is therefore great for anyone who finds cutting tiring on their hands or wrists. It is intended for use by adults. A child could manage it but might need some adult help with laying the tiles, and should certainly not mix or use grout without supervision.
Solomon's knot is a traditional decorative motif used since ancient times and found in many cultures. Over the centuries it has been interpreted in many ways but there are a few broad understandings of its meaning; for some, its interwoven but unconnected links set out the relationship between the human and the divine. For others, the endless loops are symbolic of eternal love and unity. Still others believe that it is capable of warding off evil; in the Old Testament King Solomon is given a knotted ring by the archangel Michael, and this gives him power over demons - their devilish curiosity drives them to follow a line to its end, and the continuous loops of the knot trap them for eternity. Whether it's as a talisman, a celebration of love and affection, or simply for fun, this is a very satisfying pattern to make.
