Mosaic Workshop

The small town of Spilimbergo at the foot of the Italian Dolomites is known as the mosaic capital of the world.   For several hundred years the local area has produced an extraordinary number of skilled mosaicists, and this talent pool, along with proximity to Venice, the right natural resources and a great dash of entrepreneurial flair, have earned the town its reputation.  This was cemented in 1922 when the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli opened its doors in Spilimbergo.  Mario Donà moved his family factory from the Venetian island of Murano to Spilimbergo in the 1990s, but kept alive the traditions and recipes of his father and grandfather, both of whom had been Muranese master glassmakers.  

These smalti are sold in 100g bags which contain approximately 35 pieces. 
Size: Individual smalti are cut by hand so measurements are not precise.  Each smalto measures approximately 18mm x 10mm x 7mm.   
Coverage: 100g of smalti should cover an 8cm x 8cm square, 500g should cover an 18cm x 18cm square, and a kilogram should cover a 25cm x 25cm square.
